The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any significant honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil within the realm of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait decades.
